WINTER
FLEET

A
couple of shots by Bill
Alden showing the boats at winter fleet in 1993. They were taken a couple of
weeks apart and show the river at low and high slack water. It's the time in
between when the river rocks.

This
rare aerial shows The Harbor in Winter fleet when the boats were moored together
and to the island and bridge as a defense against the seasonal floods.
Great care was taken to place steel vessels at the front and sides as
protection. It appears to have been taken
in the early 80's.
Harbor
Equipment:

The
MV Vern Ferguson. This is the larger of the two dredge boats owned by The LHA.
Without her, it would be impossible to routinely keep The Harbor deep enough for
operations. She was named for a past president of the LHA.

Got Mud ? This old girl gets a real workout in the Spring and whenever the
river decides to take over the parking lot.

The Trailer.

The MV Andy Hampton. named for the current Vice President of The LHA. She can
get in and out of the tighter slips that are too tight for our other dredge.

The Wharfboat and the indispensable utility boat. It is used for: dock
repair, debris removal, vessel relocation and retrieval, among others.

Others:

A
really interesting 2002 aerial view of The Harbor and surrounding area. The
circular area at the extreme upper right seems to be the remnants of the old Thurston Park Fountain.

A
nice shot showing some of detail of The Harbor Island Bridge. The Bridge has
always bee crucial in provisioning large vessels moored on The Island as well as
a secondary mooring anchor for the winter fleet.

Here
are a few shots of the old mooring ring out in the meadow at the upper end of
The Harbor. Although its origins are unclear, it may have been a USACE
commercial or emergency mooring, or an anchor for a protective cable to guard
the winter fleet during the winter. Regardless of its origins, the fact that it
is several hundred feet from the main river speaks volumes to the volatility of
the river in the immediate area.
