- The USCG Calls for Public Hearings on the Proposed Marina Design.
During the course of discussions with
the United States Coast Guard, it was learned they are strongly opposed to the
proposed design. Since they operate the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) Louisville
which "guides mariners through the treacherous waters near the Falls of the
Ohio", their opposition is based on the congestion that would result from
the introduction of an overly large number of recreational vessels in close
proximity to the restricted commercial channel adjacent to The Harbor. This
concern has been well known to the Corps and the developers all along as it was
included in numerous public comments, including ours. (see USACE
Comment and Additional
Details )
Examination of the criteria used in the
USCG determinations uncovered the fact that no one, including the Corps, had
pointed out the navigational safety concerns voiced by the local boating
community as it pertains to operating a recreational vessel in such a poorly
designed layout. Once again, our interests and opinions had been overlooked. We
were happy to supply the comments previously submitted to the Corps
Given the concerted efforts by the WDC
and others to keep any controversial issues surrounding this development
initiative out of the public eye and the reluctance shown by the USACE to
address the navigational safety and operational concerns, we can only hope this
will finally bring the public hearings we have been requesting for over a year.
It remains to be seen if this will be done behind closed doors or if the local
boating community will be properly notified and given the opportunity to
participate.
Contrary to the
picture painted by Louisville Waterfront Development Corporation the true value of the Louisville Municipal Yacht Basin (as it
was known at the time) to the citizens of Louisville Metro can best be seen in this
