Tues
Nov 8 2005 - A
meeting was held to discuss the historic and archaeological concerns pertaining
to the planned development.
The
USACE held a Consulting Party meeting hosted by The WDC at their offices on
River Road. All of the major players were present. These included: the
developers, KY State and Louisville Metro Historic Preservation Officers,
concerned citizens, neighborhood organizations, Native American interests. and
advocacy groups.
The
meeting was a positive one from our perspective in as much as the historic
significance of The Harbor has been put firmly on the table and a formal
determination process has been initiated at the state and federal level.
Although the specific outcome is unclear, we are guardedly optimistic this
review process will be favorable and further our stated goal of encouraging a
historically sensitive redevelopment of The Harbor.
Another
positive aspect of the meeting is we were finally given the opportunity to make
a case for the business and marketing advantages of historic consideration
directly to the development team. To say they were eager to embrace this concept
would be untrue, but at least a dialogue has begun.
Besides
continuing our efforts for formal historic site designation, the next stage will
involve discussions on operational and navigational concerns. We believe this
will further reinforce the relevancy of the original harbor design and further
our stated goals.
